  • Dr. Sayed Khwaja | Island Stat Care

My Biography Raised on Long Island, I spent my youth balancing academic excellence, competitive sports, and memorable summers at Jones Beach with my family. I went on to graduate with honors from Columbia University, earning a B.A. in Biology. Drawn to a holistic approach to patient care, I pursued my medical education at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Upon graduation, I completed my residency training in Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital, widely recognized as one of the nation's elite training programs. I began my career at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, where, following an impactful first year, I was invited to join the core faculty team for the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. In my role as Assistant Residency Director, I oversaw and directed the medical student clinical rotation program within the emergency department. After four successful years at Good Samaritan, I transitioned to St. Catherine of Siena and St. Charles Hospitals to serve as the Director of Emergency Ultrasound. My leadership trajectory accelerated rapidly; following my first year on staff, I took the helm as Medical Director, making me one of the youngest emergency department medical directors on Long Island. As the Emergency Department Director at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, I spearheaded numerous quality improvement initiatives that remain foundational to the department today. By introducing an innovative pay-for-performance program during my first two years, our team dramatically elevated critical metrics: average door-to-doctor times plummeted from 40 minutes to just 15, and critical stroke medication delivery times were reduced from 89 minutes to 52 minutes—placing the department in the top 5% statewide. We achieved similar landmark advancements in cardiac care timelines, and during my final year as Director, our department ranked first among the six Catholic Health Services hospitals and in the top 5% in New York State for sepsis care. After five years of transformative leadership, I stepped down, leaving behind a fully staffed department of board-certified emergency physicians—a first for the institution. Having accomplished my vision, I passed the baton to return to the pure practice of Emergency Medicine. In 2023, I launched the next chapter of my medical career by founding Island Stat Care. My vision was to establish a comprehensive, full-spectrum medical practice dedicated to supporting patients through every stage of life—offering responsive urgent care for acute illness and injury, alongside proactive primary care to maintain long-term health and wellness. Beyond my medical practice, I am the proud father of four children and a dedicated endurance athlete. My personal athletic achievements include completing seven marathons—including qualifying for the Boston Marathon with a personal best of 3:11 and racing in it twice-as well as completing Ironman Texas and seven Half-Ironman triathlons, placing in the top 10% in three of them.
